An Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two types of IUDs: hormonal and non-hormonal.
Non-hormonal IUDs are made of copper and work by preventing fertilization by blocking or killing sperm. Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of progestin hormone into the uterus, which thickens the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg and thins the lining of the uterus to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.
